Online Media Resources

More and more films and television shows are available for online viewing. Here is a selection of sites providing free or ad-supported viewing:

  • Internet Archive: Moving Image Archive  
      
    Over 150,000 films and videos including classic feature films, alternative news broadcasts, educational and industrial films, cartoons, concerts, and more.
  • American Memory: Library of Congress  
      
    16 themed collections of moving images, from films of Americans at work and leisure dating back to 1894 to reactions to 9/11 collected by ethnographers and folklorists. See also the Library of Congress' YouTube channel.
  • Motion Pictures from the National Archives  
      
    Just over 100 films from the Department of the Interior (1916-1970), NASA (1962-1981), and now-defunct Office of War Information (1942-1945).
  • National Film Board of Canada  
      
    Hundreds of films produced by the National Film Board of Canada, including documentaries, animation, and feature films, available in high-quality online video.
  • Europa Film Treasures  
      
    Rare films from over two dozen European film archives including silent films from the late-1890s to recent experimental films.
  • PBS  
      
    Programs from several current and classic PBS series are available for viewing online: Antiques Roadshow, Bill Moyers Journal, Charlie Rose, Great Performances, NOVA, NOVA scienceNOW, Frontline, Frontline/World, Julia Child, Masterpiece, Nature, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, American Masters, and American Experience.
  • MN Video Vault  
      
    Hundreds of hours of documentaries, performances, interviews, and speeches collected by Twin Cities Public Television (TPT).
  • British Film Institute: YouTube Channel  
      
    More than 200 short films and videos from the world's largest film and television archive. Selections include early documentary and comedy films, rare early color films, cartoons, experimental films, and wartime propaganda films.
  • Criterion Collection Film Festival (ad-supported, requires free membership at The Auteurs)  
      
    A monthly selection of five or six films from the prestigious Criterion Collection. Viewing of these films is free, but requires signing up for free membership at The Auteurs, a social networking site.
  • AMCTV B-Movie Classics (ad-supported)  
      
    A small collection of classic B-movies from independent studios including American International Pictures (AIP) and Anglo Amalgamated and featuring such films as Carnival of Souls and Dark Star.
  • UbuWeb: Film & Video  
      
    Hundreds of avant-garde and experimental film and video works by artists both famous and obscure.
  • Hulu (ad-supported)  
      
    A joint venture of NBC Universal and News Corp. (Fox), providing ad-supported free viewing of feature films and popular broadcast network and cable televisions shows. Additional content includes Fox News feeds of Presidential press conferences and other news and sports programming.
  • YouTube (ad-supported)  
      
    The biggest name in online amateur video now also features ad-supported free viewing of popular broadcast network and cable television shows as well as a growing collection of feature films.
  • Joost (ad-supported)  
      
    Joost is a Web site similar to Hulu that provides ad-supported free viewing of feature films and popular broadcast network and cable television shows. Joost also includes music videos among its content.
  • SnagFilms (ad-supported)  
      
    Ad-supported free viewing of over 550 documentaries, most independently-made. Users can browse by popularity, title, distributor, and topic.
  • Modern Feed  
      
    Not a content provider so much as a content aggregator, Modern Feed collects links to free online film and video and allows registered users (registration is free) to make viewing playlists and to share links to programming across social networks such as Facebook.
  • Dance in Video (Gould Library licensed resource)  
      
    Full-featured streaming video of 250 dance productions and documentaries. Selections cover ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, experimental, and improvisational dance, as well as forerunners of the forms and the pioneers of modern concert dance. Note: this collection is still under development; not all videos are yet online.
  • Opera in Video (Gould Library licensed resource)  
      
    Full-featured streaming video of 250 staged opera productions, interviews, and documentaries. Presents an overview of the most commonly studied operas in music history, opera literature, and performance classes. Multiple performances and stagings of major operas allow for analysis of stage design, vocal techniques, roles, and musical interpretation across time periods, opera houses, and conductors. Note: This collection is still under development; not all videos are yet online.
