Policies & Procedures             Print Page

Loan Policy

The media collection is open to use by anyone with Carleton library borrowing privileges, including faculty, staff, and students of St. Olaf College. Carleton faculty may check out materials for a full term, however, these items will be subject to the same recall, block, and replacement policies as print materials. St. Olaf faculty may check out materials for 7 days. Carleton staff and students may check out materials for 3 days. St. Olaf staff and students may check out materials for 4 hours for use in the library only.

Requesting New Titles

Faculty from any department may request the purchase of materials by contacting the Media Resources Coordinator. Academic departments may have varying procedures for making library purchase requests. If you are unsure what your department requires, please ask your department chair.

Once requested, please allow a minimum of two weeks for materials to arrive. Some titles from educational film distributors (e.g. Films for the Humanities and Sciences, Bullfrog Films) may take longer to arrive because they make each copy on demand.

Students and staff may also suggest titles for purchase by contacting the Media Resources Coordinator.

Reserves

Because it is housed behind the reserves desk, the media collection is already a "closed reserve" collection. At the same time, the materials are still subject to checkout by other faculty. If faculty would like to ensure that materials will be readily available for in-library use by students, they may place them on reserve by contacting the Media Resources Coordinator or the library's Reserves Coordinator. For more information on library reserves, see the reserves policies.

Screenings

Two classrooms equipped for video screenings are available in the library. Room 305 has a capacity of 20, room 344 has a capacity of 25. Screenings in the library can be scheduled by contacting the Media Resources Coordinator. Screenings should be booked at least a week in advance to ensure availability of rooms and materials. Library staff will take care of starting all screenings that take place in the library, but cannot be responsible for screenings outside the library.

Viewing Media in the Library

The library provides two DVD/VCR-equipped viewing stations on the fourth floor (against the east wall of the current periodicals area) and five viewing stations on the mezzanine (or fifth floor) level. DVDs may also be played in any of the computers in the library's computer labs. Headphones, if needed, may be borrowed from the library's reserves desk.
