Citation Examples (MLA)

When using MLA style (8th edition) to cite online reproductions of newspapers and periodicals (such as publications from ProQuest Historical Newspapers and just about anything you'll find in the Media History Digital Library [MHDL]), you will need to cite not only the original publication information, including page number, but also the URL for the online reproduction and the date you accessed it. Microfilmed manuscripts and primary source collections (such as the pressbooks collections and the Hollywood and the Production Code collection), do not require you to identify them as microfilm.

The MLA citation examples below cover most of the kinds of sources typically used in this course:

The Film Daily citation examples below demonstrate how to craft citations for both the microfilm reproduction you will find in the library and an online reproduction you might find online (via the Media History Digital Library or other website). They all follow this basic format (microfilm example followed by web example):

      Lastname, Firstname. “Title of Article.” Title of Original Publication, Year of original publication: pages. Title of Microform Collection (Year of reproduction publication): reel number.

      Lastname, Firstname. “Title of Article.” Title of Original Publication, Year of original publication: pages. Title of Website, URL. Day Month Year [actual date you accessed this source].
