Using Catalyst to Search for Books

Books & eBooks

Two kinds of books, monographs and essay collections, compose the majority of Gould Library's collection. Monographs provide extended analysis of a topic by a single author. Essay collections bring together articles, often by different authors, on a given topic.

In Catalyst, the shared library catalog for the libraries of Carleton and St. Olaf Libraries:

  • Limit Catalyst to books, either by searching in the Books tab, or using the Books filter on the left after your initial search
  • Begin with a keyword search.
    • Enter words that describe your topic (names, places, events, etc.).
    • When you find a book on your topic, examine its subject headings for relevance to your topic.
    • Click on a hyperlinked subject heading to perform subject heading search and retrieve related books.
  • You can perform a subject heading search in Catalyst if you know a valid Library of Congress subject heading. Please see your librarian to learn more about subject headings.
    • Subject headings are a set of terms or phrases (known as controlled vocabulary) that classify materials.  Essentially they identify and pull together under a common umbrella information about a given subject.  Most online catalogs and databases use some form of subject headings, though they may also be called descriptors or keywords.

For example: Search "Africa" as a subject heading to browse a list of relevant subject headings, such as:

  • Africa -- Emigration and immigration
  • Africa -- Emigration and immigration -- history
  • Africa -- migration and immigration -- economic aspects
  • African -- diaspora -- Encyclopedias (to search for reference materials)

*Note that many Library of Congress subject headings relevant to African Studies do not begin with "Africa":

  • Migration--internal--Africa
  • Kenya -- Politics and government
  • Women -- Africa, East -- Economic conditions
