When you discover an image online and want to know if it is licensed for reuse or fully protected by copyright (and you would need to seek permission to reuse), look for the following information:
- Photographer name and title of image - you need this for citation
- Date image was taken - needed for citation
- Language about license or permission - to determine your ability to reuse
- Icons and abbreviations used for Creative Commons licenses, for example CC BY-SA
- Language about conditions under which the image was published, such as "used with permission" (indicating this author is not the original copyright holder)
