Historians document their sources carefully. Monographs and essays in edited works will have bibliographies that give you a good sense of the scholarship within which the author is placing their work. Use the secondary literature that you already have to find more secondary literature that could be useful for your research.
Databases and journal archives allow you to search the contents of journals (articles, book reviews). As such, they provide a good avenue for searching the most recent scholarship in a field.
