Search Strategies for Finding Books

  • Search Catalyst (the library catalog) to find ebooks and print books owned by Carleton and St. Olaf. Books located at St. Olaf can be sent to Carleton for you to borrow.
  • Search WorldCat to find books owned by libraries around the world. When viewing a book record in WorldCat, click "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan" to request a copy, and we'll work to get a copy of the book sent to Carleton for you to borrow.
  • Keep your search terms fairly general. Remember that books will typically have a broader focus than articles, so when looking for books, broad terms like "cognitive neuroscience"  may be more helpful than searching "cognitive neuroscience" AND sleep AND teenager.
  • Explore the filters to the left of your search results to further refine your search. If you only want to find books, limit by Material Type to exclude articles, dissertations, videos, etc. Limiting your results by date of publication can be helpful for making sure the resources you find are up to date.
  • Ask a librarian for help! We're always happy to help you find and request the materials you need.
