Sustainability Across the Curriculum: Local Data Resources

About

This guide is intended to curate several locally available data resources. Each resource could be used or could spark further interest in developing curricular materials that are focused on sustainability issues. This guide may develop as faculty and staff express interest in different types of data.

Can curricular materials be generated around these datasets? Perhaps there are additional data sources that you might like to compare with one of these datasets? Please reach out with questions and further data that might be applicable.

The data sources are organized by topic in the navigation menu.

  • The water data tab currently lists a LakeFinder resource featuring fish surveys at lakes in the state of Minnesota. The data could be used to compare lakes across boundaries, or examine the fish populations overtime.
  • The transit data tab features links to VMT or vehicle miles traveled. The VMT data could be used to ask questions about affects such as air quality.
  • The weather data tab includes precipitation, temperature and snowfall information available through the Midwest Regional Climate Center or MRCC. The weather data could be used to chart the change in the number of days reaching upward of 100 degrees.
  • The population data tab features a tool called PopFinder from the state of Minnesota.

Most of the data is provided via resources from the State of Minnesota. This resource explicitly does not include Carleton-generated data.
