Using Catalyst to Find Books and eBooks

You can begin with a keyword search

  • Enter words that describe your topic (names, places, events, etc.).
  • When you find a book on your topic, conduct a virtual browse at the very bottom of a book record in Catalyst, to discover related titles.
  • Click on a hyper-linked subject heading in the book record to perform subject heading search and retrieve related books.
  • You can also look at the bibliography of books you have already identified as useful.

Additional tips for book searching using Catalyst

Perform a subject heading search using the Catalyst advanced search option if you know a valid Library of Congress subject heading. Here are some examples:

  • Israel--Politics and Government
  • Palestine--Politics and government--1948-
  • Israel-Arab Border Conflicts, 1949-
  • West Bank -- Ethnic relations

The term "Arab-Israeli conflict" is used in the online catalog to refer to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Search for this term to browse a list of relevant subject headings, such as:

  • Arab-Israeli conflict -- 1967-1973
  • Arab-Israeli conflict -- Sources
  • Arab-Israeli conflict -- 1993- -- Peace
  • Arab-Israeli conflict -- 1973-1993 -- Public opinion
