Below are some of the most common aspects of a citation that have changed in the Eighth Edition. All publication formats now follow the same set of core elements, identified in the "Basic Citation Patterns in MLA" box on this guide.

  • Page numbers are now written pp.
  • Volume and number are spelled out followed by a comma: vol.46, no.4. No need to use parenthesis.
  • Date of access is no longer needed. Instead, stable URL must be provided (without https:// or http://)
  • Publication format is no longer needed.
  • City of publication is no longer needed.
  • Web sources must now include the URL (without https:// or http://)
