Enter the title of your movie in quotation marks into the search box below. If the title of your movie is a common word or phrase (e.g. "The Birds"), you might want to add the director's name to the search box, outside of the quotation marks. Example: "The Birds" Hitchcock.
Using the options to the left of your search results, filter your results under "Material Type" to "Reviews."
Further filter your results by "Publication Date" to the years just before and after the original theatrical release of your movie.
You will find contemporary reviews for movies in major US newspapers as well as news articles on movies and the movie industry. To search for reviews only, do you search and then click on the "Document type" link under "Narrow results" on the right-hand side. Click "Review" and your search results will be filtered to show only reviews.
Includes full text archives of many film publications such as Sight and Sound and Film Comment that include reviews. Enter "Review" as "Article Type" when searching to limit to reviews.

This index includes citations of articles in popular magazines from 1900-1995 including Newsweek, Time, Life, The New Republic, The New Yorker, and The Nation. You will first need to find the volume for the year you want to search, then look under the heading "Moving picture plays -- Criticisms, plots, etc. -- Single works," then look for the title of the film. The index will then show you what issues of what magazines have an article or review of the film.
You will then need to find your issue of the magazine among the bound periodicals on the library's third floor or request the article through Interlibrary Loan if we do not own the magazine.
