A guide to the various ebook options at Carleton

ebooks in Libby and Overdrive

Libby app and OverDrive browser

Libby is the current app for browsing and enjoying Overdrive's digital content from our library. As a platform for Carleton students, faculty, and staff to download popular fiction and nonfiction eBooks and audiobooks to their personal devices, content can be downloaded to many types of devices, including personal computers, eReaders, and smartphones.

  • If you are looking for technical assistance or for information on supported devices, please see Libby's user help section.
  • Libby app replaced the Overdrive app in 2023. Overdrive is still available in your browser, through links in Catalyst or in the  "Databases" tab .

Where can I find Libby?

If you are intending to read or listen to books on a mobile device, download the Libby app to your chosen device and follow instructions to add Carleton College as your library.

You can still find a link to the library's OverDrive subscription on the "Databases" tab on the library website. If reading/listening to books in a browser, linking to OverDrive through the library website or Catalyst links will ensure that you are using our subscription (and have downloading privileges non-subscribers lack).

Checkouts

In order to check out and download material with Libby, you will need to have installed either the Libby app or Adobe Digital editions for use on your computer.

Libby is available to download from the Amazon App Store. Going forward, users with Amazon Fire tablets should download Libby directly from the Amazon Appstore instead of manually sideloading the app. Fire tablet users who already have the OverDrive app installed can continue to use it for now, but it is no longer in active development.

You will need your Carleton ID in order to check out materials.

Loan period

eBooks and audiobooks are available for a period of 21 days. You may also choose to check them out for 7 or 14 days.

Returning materials

Materials are automatically returned at the end of the loan period, so there are no late fees.

An item can be renewed up to three days before the end of the loan period, and can be renewed up to three times. Alternatively, a user can let the loan period end, then check the item out again if no other users have placed a hold.
