Indigenous students have been a part of the Carleton community since 1887, when the first known indigenous student, George Kidapisidus "Yellow Bull" Bassett, attended the academy. Nearly a century later the first organization for indigenous students, NAWAF, would be formed in 1981 and would be succeeded by two other supporting organizations. Presently, the Indigenous Student Alliance provides a community for indigenous students on campus.
