Carleton College Archives: History of BIPOC Student Organizations at Carleton

Ebony II

1976 - 2016
Ebony II was established in 1976 as an entirely Black dance group. The troupe held fundraisers and performed at least once a term since its founding. At some point in the later 1980s, the organization began to welcome dancers of all backgrounds and lost its cultural connection to Black student life. As seen in the photos of performances the dance style and tone changed drastically between the troupes founding and the 1990s. In 2016, conversations were held on campus to discuss the group's name and history, which culminated in changing the name to Synchrony II. Read more about this name change in the Carletonian.
